Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
